Traditional Methods of Making Paint, 

Panel and Canvas

2 Days, June 29th and 30th, 10:00-5:00, one hour lunch break

Cost: $280 (materials included)

Instructor: Leo Mancini-Hresko

Leo Mancini-Hresko teaches how to make and work with traditional painting materials, whether hand-ground paints, archival gesso panels, oil-primed linen canvases, mediums, oils or varnishes. Leo has experience working with both beginner and advanced artists who want to take their process into their own hands. After years of teaching materials at The Florence Academy of Art and in his own studio, Leo has an intimate understanding of how the materials used in painting affect your process.

This workshop will comprise of both extensive lecturing and hands-on practice.  Each student will be worked with individually, and will create their own hand-ground paint, gesso panels and linen canvases - processes that they will easily be able to replicate in their own studios.  

Basic Outline-

Day 1- Pigment History, Oils, Paint Rheology.  Group will 'grind' paint, and will begin talk on Rabbit Skin Glue and Supports.

Day 2- Flexible/Rigid Supports, Linen, Panel, Metal Supports.  Group will make Gesso Panels and Canvas, and talk on Mediums and Varnishes.

Leo began his studies in 1999 at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University.  During a semester abroad in Florence, Italy, Leo found The Florence Academy of Art, where he began studies in 2001.

After graduating in 2005, Leo was asked to stay on at the school, first as an instructor and subsequently director of the school’s drawing program for sculptors.  Additionally, Leo taught regular courses in plein-air landscape painting and artist materials until leaving the school in 2011.

Having left his 19th-Century painting studio in Florence, Leo has relocated to his native Massachusetts, now working and teaching from his studio in an old mill building in Waltham, MA.

Whether working en plein-air or in the studio Leo works with traditional materials, his own hand-ground paints, canvases and oils.

Color Lab: Flesh Tones

10 days, August 19th - 30th     10:00 - 5:00, one hour lunch break,

Cost: $1150.00 (plus $50 materials fee)

Color is an indispensable tool for painters. Mastery of color unlocks freedom and control over one's  ability to solve color problems. Painting accurate flesh tones is a demanding task for beginners. A key problem may lie in lacking a complete understanding of the principles of color. Once they have been understood, artists can move on to express ideas in painting with control and freedom. Let us inquire about the language of color, the nature of color, and acquire mastery over flesh tones.   Course Description:  This class is designed to aid students in understanding the fundamental  principles of color, particularly how it applies to painting flesh. Using modern color science as well as color measuring tools such as the Munsell Book of Color and a spectrophotometer, students can explore color more deeply. It is designed to demystify the creation of flesh tones and managing the challenges they bring. Students will progress through fundamental lessons that start with mixing and organizing a flesh tone palette, then painting geometric shapes that are flesh colored, followed by a color study of a selected print of a female model.  Lectures, painting demonstrations and reference material are given throughout the workshop. 2013 Summer Workshops

Still Life Painting

10 Days, July 22nd - August 2nd   10:00 - 5:00, one hour lunch break.  Cost:  $1150.00

Instructor: Christina Mastrangelo

Students will learn how to approach an oil painting from start to finish. We start with drawing the still life in the sight-size method, transfer it to canvas, and paint in layers until the objects have form and detail. This course teaches traditional atelier-style methods, from using a campitura, to dead color, first painting, and second painting, all working from life. Demonstrations will be given on the layout & methodical uses of the full-color palette, as well as lectures and handouts on mediums, steps of the process, hue/value/chroma, color mixing, palette care, and varnishing. The goal of the course is to understand the observational painting process and come away with a realistic still-life painting.

This course is recommended for artists looking to create more realistic work. Prior experience with painting in oil is not necessary. This is a very logical, academic course; everything learned here will translate well into drawing or painting any subject from life.
