2015 Figure Painting Competition Announced



The Academy of Realist Art Boston will be hosting a juried figure painting competition in Boston in July. We anticipate drawing on a national pool of high caliber figure painters. We will be jurying applicants and selecting only 10 participants. These artists will be restricted to painting from the figure model as a group for 35 hours over a period of 5 days (30 hours of direct observation from the model and 5 hours without the model). One painting will be completed.

Viewer Choice Award: Rosemary Paintbrush Bouquet

10 participants will compete for 5 days from one sustained 35 hour figure pose. One painting will be completed.

Dates and times: Monday, July 27th to Friday, July 31st. 10:00 to 6:00 each day. Model hours: 10:00am - 1:00 and 3:00 - 6:00. Participants will also be allowed one hour per day to work on their pieces without the model posing. The competition room will be open daily for public viewing from 1:30 - 2:30 pm.

Medium: This competition is for oil painters only.

Supports: Supports may be prepared with a simple tone in advance. Size must be 24” by 36”.

Judging: The Judging will take place on Friday July 31st after 6:00 PM. See info about our judges below.

Criteria: The first round of judging is based on the following criteria:
  1. anatomical and proportional accuracy
  2. natural gesture
  3. likeness and body type
  4. execution of the light effect

The second round of judging is based on artistic excellence:
The top 3 paintings will advance to the second round wherein the 2 winners will be chosen based on overall artistic mastery.

Viewers Choice Awards: The viewers choice award will be open for voting at the end of the working day on Friday and will close at noon on Saturday.

Award Ceremony and Reception: August 1st at 2 PM at ARA Boston (subject to change). This will be open to the public.

Ali Ringenburg (Owner and Director, Sloane Merrill Gallery), Paul Goodnight (Boston Figurative Artist and Teacher), Cindy MacMillan (Director, ARA Boston). More Judges will be added as confirmed.

Submission Details: May 1st deadline. Applications taken through our website and email. To apply to be one of the 10 participants, we ask that you submit at least 5 images, 3 of which need to be figurative paintings. Please note that participants are responsible for all expenses related to travel and lodging.

Info About our Judges

Ali Ringenburg: Owner and Director, Sloane Merrill Gallery, Boston Until 2012 there was a gaping void in the Boston art scene. Then Ali opened Sloane Merrill in historic Beacon Hill. It has become the premier setting where traditionally trained artists find voice and representation. Ali's commitment to the art and the artist is proof that oil on canvas can be a powerful expression in a 21st Century digital world. Ali holds a BA in Art History from Vanderbilt University, worked at the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Contemporary Arts Center, and served as Director of Principle Gallery in Virginia.

Paul Goodnight: Internationally Renowned Figure Artist Paul has had an extensive career as a figure painter. His expressive and lively figure works fuse the human forms to their environment with an integration of realism and abstraction. Paul's paintings have appeared on numerous television shows including ER, Seinfeld, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and The Cosby Show. His work can be found in the collections of Maya Angelou, Samuel L. Jackson, Wesley Snipes, the Smithsonian and the Hampton University Museum. In 1996 he was commissioned to design the official commemorative poster for the Atlanta Summer Olympics. Paul holds a BFA and MFA from Massachusetts College of Art. He works and teaches out of the historic Piano Factor in Lower Roxbury and is an instructor at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. This summer he will be traveling to Uganda to teach drawing.

Cindy MacMillan: Academy of Realist Art, Boston, Founder and Director Cindy is a practicing artist who divides her time between working in the studio and superintending ARA Boston academy operations. One of the first graduates of this program in Toronto she completed the rigorous program under the tutelage of Michael John Angel in 2002. She went on to earn a masters degree from the New York Academy of Art in 2007. Cindy has been the recipient of scholarships from the Art Renewal Center and the New York Academy of Art. Her work has won numerous awards and is collected internationally.
